The Indian Muslim Federation (UK) is the largest and oldest organisation of Indian Muslims in the UK and has NGO status with the United Nations.
It was founded in 1969 by British Indian Muslims in the wake of anti-Muslim riots in Ahmadabad and was named as Indian Muslim Association (IMA). It organised the first ever demonstration in London against the anti-Muslim riots in India. The IMA, having no offices of its own, continued working on an ad hoc basis and therefore its meetings were held, as occasion permitted, at its members founders
residences.
Few months later the IMA was renamed as Indian Muslim Federation (UK) – (IMF). In 1982 IMF bought a derelict property in East London (address as present, under refurbishment) that after simple uplift became known as IMF Hall and on 05 February 1983 was inaugurated by the Indian High Commissioner in London His Excellency V. A. Sayed Muhammad. It has been serving as IMF’s offices and a community centre since then.
Since its inception in 1969 the IMF has organised a number of seminars and meetings on the plight of Indian Muslims and also has held protest marches against anti-Muslim pogroms in India.
After being accredited with Non Governmental Organisation status by the United Nations in 1999, on 28 June 2000, the IMF presented a report on Indian Muslims: Prospects /& Retrospects at a special session of UN’s Geneva 2000 Form that was prepared and read by Dr Z. U. Khan, Professor at Jamia Millia Islamia, Delhi.
